Operational notes

A bit of a crazy one last week.

All Geographers

Tracking natural disasters on Earth. See how many days have passed since the last earthquake, volcanic eruption, hurricane & more.

The same talented creator that brought you Absurd Trolley Problems (mentioned in issue #22) has produced Days Since Incident - as I write this it has been 3 days since the Earth had a Magnitude 6.0 Earthquake, 262 days since the Earth experienced a 10m High Tsunami and 41734 days since the Earth experienced a Megaton Asteroid Impact.

Gapminder Worldview Upgrader - Get rid of your misconceptions about global development!

Gapminder Worldview Upgrader is a fun educational tool created to help people rid themselves of common systematic misconceptions about global development.

Gapminder Worldview Upgrader has been around for a while and I have used it with my DP classes when looking at the Sustainable Development Goals.

I believe that the 'Regions' section is new - where you can take the 'misconception tests' on individual countries. It is a great introduction activity as you start to focus discussions upon a certain country or group of countries. It turns out that I have few misconceptions about Morocco...

Updates

Not much to report on the updates front, but I have a number of projects simmering away, including a trip (with students) to Morocco.

I am currently teaching 2.2 Consequences of global climate change and 6.2 Environmental risks - so this is where you may see pages and content being updated.

Random

Kate Bellingham reports that an exciting new interconnected world - a world where every word ever written, every picture ever painted and ever film ever shot...

In 1994 - when 20 million people where connected to it and I was doing my GCSEs - this new fangled service, the internet, was worthy of a section on a mainstream technology/innovation programme called Tomorrow's World.

It's always worth taking a moment to pause and think about how far we have come... Your students that are 15 years old have not living in a World without the iPhone!
