How do you know what you don’t know? - Issue 36
Le Brévent from Chamonix, February 2023
⚙ Operational notes
I have nothing to add to the Random section today and have removed it. From now on, as long as I have something for at least three of the four sections of the newsletter, I will publish it.
🌍 All Geographers
Immersive images are useful when teaching geography. 360° images students can explore by clicking on and dragging around are more engaging than their static textbook-based equivalents.
You can find 360° images taken by others or produce your own using a smartphone app or specialist camera such as the 🔗 Ricoh Theta. I used to use a service called Roundme to host and present my images - but they recently and sadly seem to have closed.
Enter 🔗 kuula, who seem like a very good replacement! The free tier is excellent and seems to do nearly everything I need to host images and embed them nicely in geographyalltheway.com. You can explore example images 🔗 here, noticing the use of the service by the real estate industry. My tours can be found 🔗 here, and I will be adding more in the near future.
🧑🎓 IB DP Geographers
Food and health Geographic theme → Advantages and disadvantages of contemporary approaches to food production, including genetically modified organisms (GMOs), vertical farming and in vitro meat.
It is that time in the course again - it’s time to cook something for my students using insects. It has been a while. According to Instagram, I took the above image 301 weeks ago. I like to discuss the whole ‘would you’ and ‘should we’ eat insects discussion during the later parts of the 🔗 Food and health unit.
Mealworm brownies are easy to make. You can get ‘catering grade’ mealworms from a couple of sources. For those of you in the UK, I recommend 🔗 Eat Grub. This time I have used 🔗 essento for delivery to Switzerland, adding some savoury insect snacks to the order for those who prefer something salty.
⬆ Updates
By the end of this week, I will have finished teaching the 🔗 Food and health unit (again). With the reduced content demands associated with COVID-19, it seems like years since I delivered the unit. I have given the resources a good polish and refresh. Check it out, and please do let me know what you think.
